Cynnig: Dydd Gŵyl Dewi fel Gŵyl Banc

(Cyng. Jeff Smith):

Nododd y Cyng Jeff Smith fod gan yr Alban ac Iwerddon wyliau banc swyddogol i ddathlu eu nawddsant a'u bod yn gallu gwneud y gorau o'r dyddiau hyn o ran dathlu eu hunaniaeth a'u diwylliant yn ogystal â hybu eu proffil yn y farchnad ryngwladol. Roedd San Steffan wedi gwrthod yr un hawl i Gymru sawl gwaith ac felly yn unol â gweithred unochrog Cyngor Sir Gwynedd i roi gŵyl banc i’w staff ar Ddydd Gŵyl Dewi cynigiodd y dylai Cyngor Tref Aberystwyth gymryd y camau canlynol:

  • Cyngor Tref Aberystwyth i wneud Dydd Gŵyl Dewi yn ddiwrnod o wyliau i'w staff
  • Cyngor Tref Aberystwyth i alw ar Lywodraeth San Steffan i ganiatáu i Ddydd Gŵyl Dewi i fod yn ŵyl y banc swyddogol yng Nghymru

Awgrymwyd y dylid anfon llythyr at Ysgrifennydd Gwladol Cymru ac Ysgrifennydd Gwladol yr Wrthblaid dros Gymru ar ôl yr etholiad nesaf.

Cefnogodd y Cynghorwyr y cynnig yn unfrydol a PHENDERFYNWYD gwneud 1 Mawrth yn Ŵyl Banc ychwanegol i staff ac i roi cyhoeddusrwydd eang i hyn.

Motion: St David’s Day as a Bank Holiday

(Cllr Jeff Smith):

Cllr Jeff Smith noted that both Scotland and Ireland had official bank holidays to celebrate their patron saints and were able to make the most of these days in terms of celebrating their identity and culture as well as to boost their profile in the international market place. Westminster had consistently refused Wales the same right so in line with Gwynedd County Council’s unilateral action in giving their staff a bank holiday on St David’s Day his motion proposed that Aberystwyth Town Council should take the following steps.

  • Aberystwyth Town Council To make St David's Day a day off for its staff
  • Aberystwyth Town Council to call on the Westminster Government to allow St David's Day to be an official bank holiday in Wales

It was suggested that a letter be sent to the Secretary of State for Wales and the Shadow Secretary of State for Wales after the next election.

Councillors unanimously supported the motion and  RESOLVED to make 1 March an additional Bank Holiday for staff and to publicise this widely.

Paratoi datganiad i’r wasg ac ysgrifennu at yr Ysgrifennydd Gwlad ayb

Prepare press release and write to Secretary of State etc

Roedd Leopold Kohr yn economegydd, yn gyfreithydd ac yn wyddonydd gwleidyddol a oedd yn adnabyddus am ei wrthwynebiad i "gwlt mawredd" mewn trefniadaeth gymdeithasol ac fel un o'r rhai a ysbrydolodd y mudiad Small Is Beautiful. Dysgodd athroniaeth wleidyddol ym Mhrifysgol Aberystwyth o 1968 hyd 1977.

PENDERFYNWYD comisiynu plac (am gost o tua £100) i’w osod ar 12 Stryd y Popty gyda’r geiriau a ganlyn:

1968 – 1977

Leopold Kohr lived here

'Mae bach yn brydferth'

‘Small is beautiful’

Byddai placiau i goffau merched yn cael eu trafod ymhellach yn y cyfarfod Rheoli Cyffredinol nesaf. Byddai'r Cyng Jeff Smith yn cylchredeg dogfen a gynhyrchwyd ar gyfer taith gerdded hanesyddol o amgylch y dref a oedd yn cynnwys bywgraffiadau bach nifer o fenywod a fu’n byw yma.

Motion: Leopold Kohr plaque:

(Cllr Alun Williams)

Leopold Kohr was an economist, jurist and political scientist known both for his opposition to the "cult of bigness" in social organization and as one of those who inspired the Small Is Beautiful movement. He taught political philosophy at Aberystwyth University from 1968 until 1977.

Council RESOLVED to commission a plaque (at a cost of approximately £100) to be placed on 12 Baker Street featuring the following wording:

Bu Leopold Kohr yn byw yma

1968 – 1977

Leopold Kohr lived here

'Mae bach yn brydferth'

‘Small is beautiful’

Plaques commemorating women would be discussed further in the next General Management meeting.  Cllr Jeff Smith would circulate a document produced for a historic walk around the town which featured mini biographies of several women who had lived here.
